Academy History

Founded in 2008 by Martin and Gemma, Think F.A.S.T emerged from a shared vision to support children struggling academically and emotionally. Martin’s transformative experience in boxing, coupled with Gemma’s background in social care, fueled their passion to establish an Academy for young people who have faced difficulties in life.

After years of preparation, the Academy launched in 2021, aiming to empower young people to realize their potential. Since then, we have engaged over 1,000 young men and women, collaborating with high schools in St. Helens, Warrington, and even expanding to schools in Manchester. The Academy also works closely with the St. Helens & Merseyside Youth Justice Service and plans to partner with Sefton Council in the future.

At the core of Think F.A.S.T is a commitment to protecting and promoting the safety, health, and development of young people. The Academy focuses on helping them navigate their emotions, manage anger and stress, and ultimately, raise their aspirations and self-belief. We believe that a challenging start does not dictate a negative outcome, and we strive to be a positive force in the lives of those we serve.

Pupil feedback

Read what recent pupils and attendees have to say about their academy experience.

My name is M. I have enjoyed Think FAST Academy and everything we have done from the guest speakers to the football to Toast and of course Boxing. All the sessions we have covered with Martin, Gemma and Liz were a great help in understanding this great dark world and how to avoid going down the road of crime. I have been inspired by Gemma and Liz how much effort and great help they have been to me. They have given be a much better hope for my future and have inspired me to the greatest version of myself, achieving whatever I set my mind to. I also thank Mr Doyle for selecting me to join the programme and giving me a break from school to get my mind back on the road of achievement. I now have a better mindset to be prepared for the future.

M

My name is A. I was referred to Think FAST because I am verbally aggressive to staff. My first impression of Think FAST was that the staff were welcoming and friendly. I felt comfortable straight away. My Favourite guest speaker was Ricky who talked about his life in Prison and growing up in a turbulent household. It was interesting to listen too. I have learnt to control my reactions much better in certain situations and I think overall my behaviour has improved. I found boxing boring because I enjoy football, but I have played football on the Astro and overall loved to come to Think FAST.

AT

My name is JB I am in Year 11 and I got enlisted onto Think FAST because I am not engaged in lessons. I have enjoyed playing pool and loved the Boxing. I have benefitted from the programme and learnt how to manage my behaviour and to manage my anger.

JB

My name is B I am in Year 11. I was asked to come to Think Fast for a 10-week period my first impression was the staff were friendly. I have loved having some time away from school and spend it with friends. I have also loved the discussion and ability to let me anger out in the Boxing. I have enjoyed all the programme and particularly found the Healthy relationships topic interesting with Mel.

B

I came to Think FAST because I got into trouble. However, over the last few weeks I have improved on my behaviour. I didn't used to wear my uniform but now I try to - especially my tie. It's less of a hassle with the teachers - wearing it! Connor was one of my favourite guest speakers. He spoke about things that happened in my life. He made me understand and I've tried to change my life.

J

My name is M. I was recommended to come to Think FAST because in school I would mess about and get angry - punching the school's property. At the moment I still struggle but I have found other ways to deal with my anger. Over the last few weeks we have talked about how beneficial it would be if I had a 'go to' adult within school -which will help when I am particularly stressed. When in school I have done this and am able to go to her when I need to. I really trust the staff and have enjoyed my time here with them. I would definitely recommend to anyone who is struggling at school.

M

My name is K and I am currently in Year 10. I think I was referred to Think FAST because I do not behave well in school. I often find I get into trouble when in class. I particularly struggle to sit still - often needing to move around after about twenty minutes. In Think FAST we have a guest speaker each session, they tell us things they have dealt with in their past, whilst some give us information about a particular topic. The Boxing Coaches are called Dom and Martin. They teach us boxing skills and I would like to go to Boxing after the programme has finished.

K

My name is OC, and I was referred to Think FAST because I kept fighting in school. I thought Think FAST was alright and the staff were okay. My favourite part of the programme was boxing and I might go in the New Year. I have become much calmer and controlled due to the strategies taught to me. I would recommend this programme to other people. I found it difficult to sit and listen to some of the guest speakers as I found them boring, but I did enjoy Billy Moore as he was interesting. I liked that the staff were kind to me.

OC

My name is AM. I was referred to Think FAST because of my bad behaviour in school. At the Academy I enjoyed the Boxing and the different Guest Speakers, who came to speak to us every session. I enjoyed the talk from Paul, who worked for the Police. He told us how he became a policeman after a very poor upbringing which eventually led him to being homeless. One thing I have learnt during the programme is the consequences of my action and this will make me think in the future. My first impression of Think FAST was that the staff were sound. I am going to the boxing gym properly in the New Year.

AM

My name is C and I am in Year 11. I was enlisted into the Think FAST Academy. It was rated good as we got a day off school each week. Since coming we have also found the staff friendly with everyone. My favourite guest speakers were Damo and Billy. They were both funny! One thing I have learnt is how to deal with situations in school. I am calmer. I found BOXING okay - I haven't done it before - that said, I wouldn't want to do it again!

C

My name is CC. At Think FAST we get to do a session of boxing each time we go. We also listen to a guest Speaker each Wednesday. They talk to us about their past, many have turned their lives around by making better choices. My favourite Guest Speakers were Damo and Ricky. Mark Burrows gave us lots of information about drugs and alcohol. Martin and Diom were our BOXING coaches. I really enjoyed the Boxing.

CC

My name is JE, and I am in Year 10. I really enjoyed having a place at the Think FAST Academy. I liked everything about the programme. At Think FAST you spend the day with the staff there. We use a booklet called Strengthening Minds and always finish the day with a boxing session in the Boxing Gym. A Guest Speaker comes in each session and talks to us about a particular topic or his life story. I like Boxing - our coaches are called Dom and Martin. My favourite Guest Speakers was called Billy Moore, Damo and Ricky. I would recommend coming to Think FAST Academy.
